An Open Door is a response to the Church’s call for ecumenism and the Holy Father’s call to help Christians in the Middle East. This five part documentary provides insight into the minds and hearts of Catholics living in Iraq. Their peaceful nature and their status as a minority, too small to defend themselves, have caused Iraqi Catholics to be targeted and made victims of war after war. Due to this situation, the Christian population in Iraq has fallen from over 1.5 million to three- to four hundred thousand, and is continuing to drop.

The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, will convene a special synod for the Middle East to be held from the 10th to the 24th of October 2010. The theme will be The Catholic Church in the Middle East: Communion and Testimony. On this occasion, I would like to express my gratitude to the Holy Father for this opportunity and blessing, which will be of benefit to us all.

Baghdad, 5. «Chiedo a tutti gli iracheni di andare a votare e di farlo per il bene dell'Iraq. Stiamo pregando perché tutto avvenga senza violenza e nell'ordine. Tutto ciò che è in nostro potere lo faremo per il bene del Paese e del popolo». Alla vigilia delle elezioni per il rinnovo del Parlamento iracheno, in programma domenica 7 marzo, il cardinale Emmanuel iii Delly, Patriarca di Babilonia dei Caldei, ha lanciato — attraverso l'agenzia Sir — un appello ai cittadini affinché si rechino alle urne. Il porporato commenta le violenze che stanno contrassegnando la campagna elettorale, le ultime, in ordine di tempo, commesse mercoledì a Ba'q{l-umacron}bah, capoluogo del Diy{l-amacron}lá, e giovedì nella capitale Baghd{l-amacron}d, che hanno provocato complessivamente cinquanta morti. È un Paese lacerato: «Sono iracheni contro iracheni — ha detto Delly — partiti contro partiti, ognuno lotta per i suoi interessi. In questi partiti ci sono tutti, sciiti, sunniti, mandei, cristiani, di tante fedi e confessioni, ed è questo il problema. Sono lotte interne che provocano numerose vittime».
Since 2005-2007 Christians have been living through hard times. At least 800 have been killed, others kidnapped and forced to leave. Families(an estimated sixty percent) are split and scattered in various countries.
